Despite the promising re emergence of the bee orchid earlier this year, the orchid project has still failed to produce anything like a flower. The bee orchid in the dry meadow struggled bravely on but it was devastated by snails and did not last much longer than the end of April/beginning of May. Interestingly at around this time we went to Britanny on holiday and were treated to a fantastic display of orchids, including Lax Flowered Orchids at Carnac, marsh orhids (Dacylorhiza spp. - not sure of the species) everywhere and Tongue orchids and Bee orchids in profusion at a disused quarry. This has re enthused me and I might well give it another crack later on.
On the other hand the Marsh Helleborine which sort of flowered last year has done nothing this year. It is moist enough but seems to be reluctant to even make shoots, and are certain not to do so now, inwhich case it will probably die off. Not looking good. So I think I will start uploading pictures of the ordchids I have seen elsewhere. Think of it as a test card.
