Orchid seedlings under bench

Orchid seedlings under bench

The flasks at the back are generally Anacamptis morio, with a single A pyramidalis, and some Dacts. The bottle cloches at the front are on the top of recently potted up A morio and Dact seedlings and the container in the top right is the cardboard sown seedlings.

Orchis simia feb 2013

Orchis simia feb 2013

The Monkey Orchid which I received in September with a damaged tip has burst back in to life. I suspected that it would rot away since it was damaged so I treated it really carefully. As with other plants damage to the apical meristem seems to have resulted in several side shoots developing (three in this case). I don't know whether this will be good or bad I suspect that it will not flower this year but I will observe it carefully to see what happens.

The Green Winged Orchids seedlings I sowed in September are doing well. There are still plenty in flasks waiting to be potted out.

Orchis militaris feb 2013

Orchis militaris feb 2013

There are 5 Military Orchids, this is the most advanced at the moment. The leaf shapes are already developing an interesting shape.

Anacamptis laxiflora Feb 2013

Anacamptis laxiflora Feb 2013

The Lax flowered orchid I grew last year has put on plenty of growth already and is now 7" tall.

Greenhouse orchids

Greenhouse orchids

The plunge bed in the greenhouse, which now contains the following:
the three front pots are the Anacamptis laxiflora seedlings I sowed earlier in the year (there are two more pots under the bench);
five pots containing Orchis militaris
one Orchis simia (with a damamged tip, but showing good root growth);
one Ophrys bombylliflora.

All the other orchids are still outdoors.

Anancamptis laxiflora

Anancamptis laxiflora

This is the same plant which flowered so beautifully last year. It is sprouting well currently in the sheltered outdoor plunge bed.

Ophrys sphegodes

Ophrys sphegodes

Also in the sheltered outdoor bed, this is growing well. Last year it did not flower well, developing a stunted poorly developed bud. Fingers crossed.

Anacamptis morio

Anacamptis morio

A new plant purchased in August as a tuber which emerged in September and is growing really well already. It is also in the sheltered outdoor plunge bed.

Anacamptis laxiflora seedlings

Anacamptis laxiflora seedlings

These are the seeds I sowed in March 2012 Asymbiotically and so far are the only seeds which have germinated successfully using this method (in marked contrast to all the Dacts I have germinated and deflasked symbiotically this year). So far they are doing well, there are about 20 seedlings in total, currently in the greenhouse plunge bed.

I also got a special deal on some Orchis militaris tubers at the same time. I treated these as follows:
2 in sylvamix plus rootgrow
2 just in sylvamix
1 in Laneside mix.

Ophrys tenthretinifera

2 parts grit
2 parts sylvamix
1 - 1.5 scoops of rootgrow

Orchis simia

I have planted in a clay pot in the following mix:
0.5 parts Perlite
0.5 parts seramis
2 parts grit
2 parts sylvamix
1 - 1.5 scoops of rootgrow

Taken in my mini studio while taking pictures of lumps of plastic. I noticed it had a faint but definite perfume (although my wife claims otherwise - but she likes the smell of Lilies and Hyacinths!)

Purchased from John Haggar, 22/4/12 at the HOS Kidlington meeting, an unusual species from Eastern Anatolia, I'll have to wait and see!

Gymnadenia conopsis

Gymnadenia conopsis

Purchased from John Haggar 22/4/12 at the HOS Kidlington meeting not sure what to do with this one, maybe in the Belfast sink, although I will need to do something about the snails. Note to self - try the gel on the edge and look into the Sheeps wool product,

Dactylorhiza maculata

Dactylorhiza maculata

Purchased from Laneside Orchids, 22/4/12 at the HOS Kidlington meeting again I might try with the wild garlic.

Epipactis palustris

Epipactis palustris

Purchased from Richard Manuel 22/4/12 at the HOS Kidlington meeting - two small seedlings well see how they fare...I'm thinking of planting them in with the wild garlic bed, not a naturally occurring combination but the conditions should be right.

Wintergreen plunge bed

Wintergreen plunge bed

I have made a wintergreen plunge bed from an old aluminium tray I made for another project, At the moment it is below the level of the staging and the main plunge beds where late summer sunlight could burn their delicate shoots.

I have brought in the D. fuchsii (Common Spotted Orchid) which flowered earlier in the year. I have to admit I'm not really sure what to do next...

Used a 12cm round terracotta pot with a crock at the bottom. I couldn't find 11cm pots which would be prefereable.
