Yellow-rattle

Yellow-rattle

Dry Meadow

I sowed Yellow Rattle (Rhinanthus minor) seed in September 2007 last year. Its germination has been sporadic but so far I have counted 5 plants. It is a hemi-parasite which is useful in reducing the vigour of grasses to allow the flowering plants to thrive. In the dry meadow it seems to be appearing mainly at the top margin, where it blends into the existing lawn beneath the cherry tree (although that may change as more emerge) perhaps becasue the dominant species seems to be the Red Clover. I did not initially sow it in the wet meadow.
