I have finally had a chance to thoroughly check my orchid seeds and the protocorms I had pricked out and moved to the fridge. Bad news on both fronts. None of the seedlings seem to have germinated, whereas the ones i sowed at the workshop had all germinated in this time. I can only assume that I did not bl;each them for long enough. On the upside they have suffered a faily low rate of infection (only one dish out of 10).
The protocorms I pricked out seem to be dying. They are going black or dark brown and I have noticed black tips to their shoots. I am really not sure what I have done wrong here, whether it is too early refrigeration, too much light at the wrong time (we do open the door quite a lot) or what I think is the the prime candidate, exposure - the protocorms all seem to be perched on a little block of oats medium rather than embedding into the medium. I think that when I sliced them out of the initial dish and transferred them I should have made more of a cavity for them in the new dish. I'll check it out - shame I can't make the HOS meeting this weekend.
Meanwhile in the greenhouse I have also lost my wasp orchid which is a real shame, I was really looking forward to seeing how it would turn out. With winter not even here yet I am starting to get worried.
