My experiment to see whether earthworms were attracted specifically to leeks seems to have been answered: I finally got down the plot yesterday and when I checked the two buckets one (the leek bucket) was home to an ants nest and the other (the brassica bucket) was no more full of earthworms than the surrounding soil. I had to clear a p[atch of leeks later on in the day, and it was noticeable that whereas the leeks earlier in the year (Jan - Feb) had large numbers of earthworms in the soil around their roots, these new leeks were almost entirely devoid of earthworms. Perhaps it was just coincidence, the worms were near the surface when I dug the leeks up. Certainly the contitions are much drier now.
