As well as designing a number of recycled plastic worm farms (see here) I have been trying to set up a number of worm farms both at home and on the plot. I have been doing this for the following reasons:
- to reduce the amount of waste going into the green bin
- to produce worm castings and vermicompost for use on the garden and allotment
- to produce wormcastings for use in the vermiponics system I am still working on
- to maybe produce enough castings and worms to sell on, in the long run
So far the large recycled plastic troughs I have used have been pretty effective and I am now starting to have trouble finding enough for them to eat. Luckily i have a large supply of manure, so I can use that for the time being. The smaller box type has also been very effective and is a bit more mobile so I can move it into my greenhouse or shed in winter. I am planning on burying the troughs from the allotment over winter to help protect them.
The vermicompost and castings so far produced have been very effective and I have also made some worm compost tea. It is too early to know how effective this is, but it has been a lot of fun so far!
