After one neutral result and one good result I was due for a kick in the teeth. I have also been experimenting with bokashi composting, to deal with the frighteningly large amounts of waste you generate when you have a two year old who only eats a quarter of what you put in front of him, which you can't give straight to the worms. I have been generous with the pricey bokashi bran so far, and have been blending and freezing the food waste to allow me to add it in batches. I have also left the resulting finished bin for longer than they say you have to (2 - 3 months) to make sure it is ready, and so far it looks nicely pickled. I did not have a viable worm bin when I started but this time I did. So I added the contents of a bokashi bin, an equal amount of bedding and few handfuls of worms. I regret doing so however - in a very short time the bin was seething with maggots, all the worms were dead and the stink was horrendous. I took a couple of pics too:
I loaded it in my car, took it with me to the allotment and buried the offending contents - hopefully the ants will clean it up a bit. There was a lot of liquid in the worm bin so it might have been due to poor drainage - the holes were smaller than I thought.
I will be wary of bokashi waste in the future, but I will continue to use it.
